Foresters
AI replacement rate
20%This role is currently tracked with 5 timeline items plus a profile-based replacement estimate.
Foresters face a low risk of direct AI replacement due to the significant physical demands, on-site judgment, and interpersonal skills required. AI is more likely to augment their work in data analysis, monitoring, and planning rather than fully replace them.

Why this role is rated this way
Structural baseThe core duties of foresters involve extensive fieldwork, surveying rugged terrain, physically planting and tending trees, and direct interaction with the environment. These tasks are currently beyond general AI and robotics capabilities for widespread, cost-effective deployment, significantly limiting direct replacement.
Foresters frequently encounter complex and variable environmental conditions, requiring nuanced decisions, adaptive problem-solving, and local ecological understanding. These situations demand human judgment that is challenging for AI to replicate without extensive real-time contextual data and adaptability.
While direct replacement is low, AI tools can significantly augment foresters' capabilities in areas like drone-based forest health monitoring, predictive modeling for disease and fire risk, timber yield forecasting, and optimizing resource management plans, leading to increased efficiency rather than job elimination.

Open originalForesters are being pulled in more directions than ever—crunching numbers, writing reports, navigating regulations, and explaining it all to clients and agencies who want it yesterday. This session explores how ChatGPT can take some of that weight off your shoulders. We’ll walk through real examples where AI has been used to draft NRCS prescriptions, summarize forest notes, calculate statistics, draft expert witness reports, troubleshoot equipment and software issues, and even find order in a pile of bird observations.
Open originalI think it’s much more likely that the professional class shrinks (us as foresters) and if you wanna stay in the business you’ll be doing the labor (forestry tech/contract cutting). It’s a bright future. ... AI? Destroy professional careers so that everyone has to work the less lucrative manual jobs? And this applies to all industries ... Generally agree. But in a perfect world, we’d use AI in ways to decrease the amount of work that everyone has to do, up and down the chain. Unfortunately, it’ll be used to wipe out white collar jobs, similar to how automation wiped out thousands of manufacturing jobs.
